How to Attract Scarlet Tanager

A stunning bird that looks like it belongs in the rainforest, the Scarlet Tanager is actually quite common in eastern forests over the spring and summer. The Scarlet Tanager is a medium-sized bird, the male is scarlet red with black wings, the female is dull green-yellow with black wings. Their spring and summer diet consists entirely of insects, so promoting an insect friendly property may help with attraction – especially if you live on or near a mature deciduous forest. In late summer and during fall migration Scarlet Tanager will also eat wild berries, so adding berry producing shrubs or trees (especially Red Mulberry) to your property may further entice this bird over for a visit. When it comes to nesting the Scarlet Tanager usually chooses a concealed spot in a large deciduous tree, Oak appears to be their preferred spot but they also find Maple, Beech, and Eastern Hemlock suitable. The Scarlet Tanager will visit birdbaths.
