How to Attract Eastern Phoebe

Despite its rather drab appearance the Eastern Phoebe is well known among those in the birdwatching community due to its characteristic song, tail flick, and early spring arrival. The Eastern Phoebe is found in open woodlands usually near a water source. As a flycatcher, this bird doesn’t visit feeders, so a yard or garden that encourages insect life is necessary. The Eastern Phoebe flies from perch to perch when flycatching so adding a perch to a spot where you know insect-activity is high (like a garden or near wetland area) is advised. The Eastern Phoebe often nests under manmade structures but may use a nesting shelf. Catching flies can be a dehydrating business, so the Eastern Phoebe will visit birdbaths but mainly for a drink.
