Helianthus
Native to North America
Perhaps the best overall flower choice for attracting birds, there are both annual and perennial varieties of Sunflower. They range from 3 to 10 feet in height and bloom their signature brown disk and yellow rays from July to August. Sunflowers will attract high numbers of insects, which will in turn attract insectivorous birds. Hummingbirds will occasionally extract nectar from Sunflowers as well. Sunflower seeds are favored by a long list of birds, many of whom will take seed from the flower itself. Among the most common Sunflower Seed eaters: American Goldfinch, Indigo Bunting, and Pine Siskin. Many birds will also use parts of the Sunflower stem for nesting material.
