Suet is one of the most effective non-plant options when it comes to attracting birds, it is composed of harden beef fat, which is sometimes combined with other bird-attracting ingredients like dried fruit, peanuts, and mealworms. Suet is a favorite of Woodpeckers but will also attract birds that don’t commonly visit feeders such as the: Ruby-Crowned Kinglet, Northern Mockingbird, and a variety of Thrushes and Warblers.
